  5. The BRAINO game consists of a series of riddles, puzzles, anagrams,
  6. rebuses, definitions, manipulated numbers and items of general
  7. knowledge.  The questions are tough and (mostly) fair.  
  8.  
  9. Let's give you a few ideas what to expect:

  11. 1.  London Times-style Crossword Puzzle definitions:
  12.  
  13.   a.  A Fine Roman  (4)  --  Answer NERO.  (fi-ne Ro-man).
  14.  
  15.   b.  Nice Roman estate (5)  -- Answer MANOR.  Rearrangment of   
  16.       letters in Roman.
  17.  
  18.   c.  Tiber sailor (5)  -- Answer Roman (Row-man = sailor).
  19.  
  20. None of the definitions are straight forward but they do provide
  21. a number of clues.  
  22.  
  23. In parentheses are the number of letters in the answer.  The
  24. notation (4,5) means two words in answer,  four and five letters
  25. each.

  27. 2.  Arithmetic:
  28.  
  29.   a.  What is the missing number?  (1 2 ? 4 5).  Answer 3.
  30.  
  31.   b.  A book costs $1 plus half its price.  How much does it cost? 
  32.       Answer:  $2.

  34. The actual arithmetic problems are a bit more difficult than these
  35. samples.

  70.        Answer:  Lancaster PA  (Everyone knows that)

  72. We think you have an idea what to expect.

  74. If you have troubles:
  75.  
  76. 1.  You can take any number of guesses so keep putting in the
  77. information until you get the right answer.  For instance, if we
  78. asked for a number between 1 and 10, you could get the right answer
  79. in eight or fewer tries.
  80.  
  81. 2.  Use the ANSWER programs only as a last resort.  It is more fun
  82. to work out the solution yourself.
  83.  
  84. 3.  Lastly, you can always use the DEBUG program to find the
  85. answer.  You use the debug search command  to find a certain phrase
  86. such as "Nice Roman Estate" and you get "MANOR".  Here is how it
  87. would look:

  103. You can use DEBUG for programs BRAINO1-4 but, to offer you more of
  104. a challenge, we have scrambled the answers in BRAINO5-8 so that you
  105. won't have any luck finding them with DEBUG.
